Lost Contacts list when composing emails

Have the full list when opening contacts , but when composing email all I get are the three groups listed ,but when I try to use these they do not appear in the address bar , the only way to send and email is open contacts click on a name and send email to that person from there. have exported my list as suggested and tried then to import but nothing has appeared
