failed to send mail

I can receive emails and until 9am this morning I could send emails

Since then whenever I try to send an email I get "failed to send mail"

I deleted quite a lot of emails from my inbox and send box and also cleared the TRASH folder.

no change.  I still get the same message when I click "send" after composing the email.
